Wengers - a Delhi institution

View Asia on pchaddha's travel map.

As you walk into Wengers, you are immediately hit with the aroma of freshly baked pastries and "patties". When we reached (mid-afternoon on a weekday) we thought we had landed during peak weekend hours. The shop was crowded and people were trying all methods possible to get the attention of the generally disinterested bakery personnel to place their orders.

My companion and I had decided that this would be our lunch stop. They say you shouldn't go food shopping on an empty stomach. Well, one should definitely pay heed to that advice if you are going to Wengers. Alas, we both had empty stomachs. So what should have been an order for two chicken patties and two pastries turned into an order for four chicken patties, two mutton patties, two chicken sandwiches, six pastries and two cold coffees...but it was so worth it! The chicken patties deserve a special mention for their melt-in-your-mouth-ness and the pineapple pastries took one second to transport me to my kiddie days when no weekend was complete without a trip to "Sweet Chariot", our local pastry shop.

I understand that Wengers has been around for well over seven decades. For good reason! Wengers is located in Block A of Connaught Place, New Delhi. Click here for more info.
